our home away from home!
We have stayed at Hale Pua Kai now four times in the past 7 years. It is the sweetest north shore hideaway you can imagine. The kitchen is well-stocked with cooking/eating tools. The house is cool inside even when it's hot outside. It has an "old Hawai'i" vibe that is just so pleasant. You have easy access to Kepuhi (10 minute walk) and Tunnels (15 minutes walk), both excellent snorkeling beaches. The one thing that was disappointing is the bed, which is a bit soft and sagging. My husband was ok with it but I was less comfortable. However, it is not a deterrent! Hale Pua Kai is our home away from home, and we will be going there every year for as long as we can! hale pua kai
We truly enjoyed our 9 night stay at Hale Pua Kai. This Hawaiian bungalow was very comfortable for the two of us. It has lots of windows, the glass letting in lots of light, and brings in the gardens, giving the interior a tropical feel. The home also has plenty of drapes and other window coverings for privacy overnight or whenever needed. The king size bed is very comfortable with beautiful, white linens. The home has a spacious upgraded bathroom with plenty of counter area and a comfortable shower. Kitchen is well appointed, with most daily utensils and appliances(it could use a coffee scoop, more spices/seasonings, & brush for basting and marinading, particularly with the bbq). Washer & Dryer worked okay, but need instructions on how to power up dryer, plus more instructions, in general, on use of room fans, lighting, and recycling. Garden is amazing, with a variety of textures and plants. It could've used a clean-up following a windy storm which left some tree debris in yard/driveway areas mid-way through our stay. Being located in the Haena neighborhood, it's conveniently located close to the amazing North Shore beaches of Haena, Tunnels, and a 10 minute walk to Kepuhi Beach. We did have to call management about a lack of flashlights since there was a possible power outage. There was frequent landscape maintenance noise which occured throughout our stay on neighboring properties. We planned our outings off-property to leave at those times. We enjoyed walks in this beautiful neighborhood, which has several dogs that tend to roam about, off-leash. They are friendly but tend to bark at times(but not overnight or for extended times). We would definitely return to Hale Pua Kai('House of the Ocean Flower'), and recommend it to couples!

peaceful stay in ha'ena
We really enjoyed staying at this property. The house is in good condition and was very clean. Bed and furniture were comfortable - the photos on the website were accurate. We especially liked having breakfast on the lanai while listening to all the birds in the early morning. The beach is a short walk across the street with several paths that bring you to very different sections of the beach. There are beach chairs and towels provided so you can spend several hours exploring the beach. The Limahuli Garden and Preserve is a mile down the road and is well worth a visit. We had two minor problems which were resolved very quickly by the rental agency. We are looking forward to staying here again in a year or two - we highly recommend this rental.

location, charm and comfort!
We love this property for its location, charm and comfort. It's our 'home away from home' when we come to Kauai once or twice a year. We love to settle in and cook dinners at home most nights, and this year made a perfect Thanksgiving dinner ala Foodland where we picked up a fresh turkey breast & yams, and fixings. Shout out to Kauai Vacation Rentals, so pro and such a nice staff; they make it a perfect and easy stay. Mahalo!

kauai vacation rentals is the best!
My husband and I have been renting vacation property from KVR since 2003. The folks there are friendly, communicative, easy to work with, and provide excellent vacation rentals. We will always rent from them as long as we travel to Kaua'i.

amazing property, setting, staff and location!! mahalo
We absolutely loved this property and will check availability if we have the opportunity to return to Kauai. The landscape was incredible, bed was comfortable and it was nice having all the standards a home does compared to a hotel. The outside shower was used daily after our short walk back from the beach (of only a block). Amazing Property, setting, staff and location!!

beautiful home!
The home was beautiful! It was super clean and comfortable, and walking distance to beaches and even a little hotel with bar and restaurant. We LOVED our stay here and can’t wait to go back. This part of the island is such a different experience than the more commercial areas. I would 100% recommend staying here!

private hawaiian bungalow
We fell in love with this little bungalow. It was clean, quiet and private, with lots of Old Hawaiian charm. There are windows on every side, so it was light and bright. Watching the rain from the covered lanai was romantic and relaxing. Just right for two!

perfect tropical paradise cottage
22 years ago we stayed at Hale Pua Kai and we finally made a return visit. Just as perfect as we remembered— although there were clearly some upgrades to the property that we truly appreciated. So happy to have a big, clean tub for my daily hot soak! The mattress on the huge king bed was SO comfy. Don’t know why we waited so long to return!

We had a very relaxing stay at this lovely house. Quiet neighborhood, easy walk to the beach. We enjoyed the lush vegetation of the area, away from any busy commercial neighborhood.
House was clean, comfortable and had a well appointed kitchen. The rental agency was easy to contact when we had some questions.

almost perfect
This sweet little house is a gem. Old school, Hawaiian charm. We loved the privacy and the casual setting, the outdoor shower, the beach umbrella and chairs, the covered porch in the rain, and most of all the LOCATION. We walked to the beach every day, and even walked to Haena State Park to hike to Hanakapiai. It was awesome.
That said, there are some big things to note. The place does not have a hotel room safe, which it needs and we requested to no avail. The old louvered windows (very necessary for ventilation) just don’t lock securely. We took our valuables (iPhones, wallets, iPad etc) to the beach every day, which meant we could not snorkel together. It was a major bummer. From personal experience (at a different rental on the same street) we no longer leave valuables unlocked or unattended. The tv remote failed a few days in to the trip, and it was never really addressed. We only missed tv a little for news. But it might have mattered to someone else a bit more. The house also needs just a deep cleaning/detailing. The bedroom drapes need cleaning, or better yet replacing. The bed and pillows need a refresh too. And it does not have a comfortable living room. There are only chairs with an ottoman and a chaise. Neither are comfortable, and you can’t cuddle up with your companion. And the upholstery is very tired. We covered it with the extra cotton blankets in the armoire, after we first washed them. It wouldn’t take much to upgrade the house just a little bit. It needs it. It deserves it. It’s a special, special place. We had fun imagining how great the simple improvements would make it..
My husband and I have rented many, many homes in Haena over the last 15 years. I started out as a backpacker to Kalalau and camper at Haena Beach Park in 1985. It’s the most magical place on earth, and we leave our hearts there every time we have to depart. Mahalo to the owner of this home for letting us enjoy Haena.

jungle paradise retreat
Wow. Imagine waking up surrounded by beautiful jungle foliage, wonderful birds and beautiful light. Our stay was magical. We loved the covered porch area in the rain and as a shaded escape. The entire cottage feels like it’s out of a fairytale and that you’ve stepped back in time.
This peaceful space allows you to immerse yourself into the true meaning of island time and relaxation. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle this is the place to do it.5

Deep in the jungle, far away from the world, Hale Pua Kai is the perfect retreat from the world for 2 guests. We have visited many times and will continue to. Its a 10 minute drive to Hanalei for shops, breakfast lunch or dinner but if you’re not inclined, you never have to leave. The beach is right across the road and from there you can hike in either direction for your perfect spot. End of the road is nearby too. But you need a reservation to visit Ke’e beach during the day or go on the trail. Plan ahead...
Hale pua kai has everything you need for a real vacation- natural beauty everywhere, the best napping soundscape in planet eartg, gentle trade winds, sunny days, starry nights. This is pure soul rejuvenation.

peaceful, and just perfect!!!
We have been here 2 other times, and when we arrived, very tired, it was just like home!! We love this house, very quiet, all the amenities that you would need, (Loved the Tommy Bahama chairs and umbrella!!) and we really got to relax. Thank you to the owners for allowing us to use their house.

Homey cottage to pass a relaxed and healing month. We spent hours on the lanai and loved using the screened porch as a music room. Rental management company was very responsive and helpful when we had internet issues.
