It is amazing how close you are to many activities, gorgeous north shore beaches, and a nice variety of restaurants and cafes. And yet, it will seem like you are on your own private island while you are at home enjoying the serenity and peacefulness of this newly and completely renovated cottage with your private dipping pool.

When you choose to venture away from your shangri-la you will find a host of modern amenities like a grocery store, post office, shops and galleries, as well as lots of activities including tours of beautiful botanical gardens, horseback riding, zip line rides, river and ocean kayaking, boat tours, snorkeling and swimming, surfing and windsurfing, fishing, golfing and, of course, sightseeing the natural wonders of Kauai, to name just a few.

You will also want to be sure to stop by at least one of the Sunshine or farmer's Markets for fresh, local vegetables and fruit to include in meals that you choose to prepare at home. There is an electric grill as well as the fully equipped kitchen where you can create your culinary masterpieces.

This charming cottage is multi-level with the loft-style master suite upstairs complete with its own bathroom. The second bedroom is also open and the walls do not reach the ceiling. It is on a different level a few steps down and also has its own bathroom. The lower level, a few steps down from the second bedroom, is the main living area with the kitchen, dining nook and living room. Sliding glass doors in the living room lead to your private lanai and dipping pool. In case you return from the beach and want to rinse off before going inside, there is an outdoor solar shower for your convenience.

If you have had dreams about your ideal tropical hideaway, they have likely been of a place just like Pali Uli 8, a true Gem in paradise.

Pros:
Good location as far as peace and quiet. It’s a freestanding unit so there’s no shared walls or anyone above you making noise.

Bbq and beach/pool accessories are onsite.

Fans in every room.

Cons:
The air conditioning is solar powered so expect it to not work about an hour before sunset. Hawaii is humid so it will get warm and muggy even in December for the first few hours at night. The air feels turbid without AC.

There are nats and flies constantly within the unit. Cobwebs and dead flies are all over the place especially behind tables and floors. Geckos are hidden inside the cracks in the ceiling and even though they help with flies, you will hear them every night if you don’t mind.

It is dusty around anything that’s not easily cleaned from the front surfaces.

The unit is technically a two bedroom but the walls are wide open throughout so there’s no privacy between the living room and bedrooms. If you’re bringing a baby then expect to stay quiet if your baby is sensitive to noise in one of the bedrooms.

The pool was nice to have but the sun never hit the pool deck in December. The step down to the pool is further than convenient. Be careful of a low spot where water doesn’t run off on the deck because it builds moss and gets slippery (small spot in front of pool).

The walk down to the unit is on a steep grade and the furthest unit from the parking lot. (Groceries, luggage, etc.)

The sofas were small and not very comfortable to lay down in.
Conclusion:

This place can be nice for some vacationers but it wasn’t what we expected. For the price we paid we thought it should have been nicer based on he description and pictures.Our second stay was far cleaner and nicer all around. And it’s was cheaper by about $50/night. Best cottage on the block. Super secluded and felt like we were in our own world. Only negatives I would give it was there were fleas in one of the beds and when we reached out to management (twice), we never got any kind of response. Luckily there was another bed and it was just us as a couple so we switched beds. Also I wish there were clear instructions on how to maintain the pool's cleanliness. Lastly, the septic tank is close by the pool/kitchen window and will blow out some stinky water debris every few flushes! We would stay again but maybe after a couple of improvements!

We had booked a place at Sealodge, then switched to the Gem. It helped us stay more isolated for noise (we couldn’t hear neighbors, and hopefully neighbors couldn’t hear our 5 year old). Place was great, clean, and had a beach trunk full of pool noodles, flippers, and snorkels. There’s more photos of the owner and their family than you’d expect, and a lot of Christian crosses, but maybe that makes guests take care of it better. Place could use a Yale code lock to avoid having to pick up and drop off keys at the rental office. The king bed was good enough, the couch feels rough to the touch- but is otherwise clean, there’s an odd stone threshold in the guest bedroom, and some gecko guano above the door frames. Overall great, would stay again.

The Gem cottage lived up to its name! What a treat to stay in this nicely furnished, clean, charming, and comfortable home. The dipping pool was a refreshing start to the day and a relaxing soak at the end of the day after hiking, swimming, or dining. If we return to the northern part of Kauai, we would love to stay in The Gem again. Mahalo!

Very nice cottage. Was clean and homey and very well stocked with everything we needed. During our stay it rained more than normal so we didn't use the pool. But it looked nice. We will stay there again if we go back.

This was our 6th trip to Kauai and the 2nd time staying in "The Gem". We love how close it is to everything we need, yet feels so private tucked back away from it all! Everything in the house was clean, stocked, and well kept. The pool is nice for a quick dip to cool off. Having a washer/dryer is a major convenience! We will definitely be back again!

My husband and I stayed at The Gem recently and absolutely loved it. The bungalow is a lofted beautiful space. The whole unit feels very private and clean. The porch was such a great feature. We loved using the outdoor shower and small pool. There is so much lush forest around the porch, you will feel like you are in a bird sanctuary. They even provide binoculars if you want a better look at the birds.

It's perfectly located in Princeville, with easy access to the beautiful beaches of the north. There was even a fun night market that was walkable from the property while we were there.

Stay here for as long as you can! Highly recommend.

Wow, the "Gem" at Pali Uli 8 exceeded our expectations and was one of the best spots we've stayed on Kauai! The house is the last property in the community, giving it complete seclusion and stunning views of the surrounding jungle landscape. The interior was immaculate, comfortable, and had everything we needed. Even with mostly cloudy/rainy days during our early December stay, we still enjoyed the outdoor patio and outdoor shower. On top of the house itself, we absolutely loved its proximity to Hanalei, the gorgeous mountain views, and Ha'ena State Park (be sure to reserve your park entrance/parking pass online within 30 days of your trip!). Agree with other comments that the house is best suited for a couple, or more if you don't mind the open loft-style walls. We highly recommend and would definitely stay here again, if we're lucky enough to visit Kauai again in the future! :)

We would highly recommend this property for any couple looking for a romantic get-away. We felt like we were staying in our own private corner of paradise. The house itself is clean, pleasantly decorated, and comfortable, but it’s the location that sets this property apart. In the mornings and evenings we went on long walks through the peaceful, beautiful neighborhoods and past the golf course. It was conveniently located near restaurants and a grocery store, but when we were at the house, we felt like we were miles away from anyone.

Such a peaceful and quiet location. Close to everywhere we wanted to go. We live on Maui but have never made it to Kauai. This was a dream come true vacation for us. Kalypso's was super fun - fun locals!!

Pali Uli #8 is the last cottage in the group and it faces the forest with a distant view of the Pacific. It really makes you feel as if you off by yourself. Everything you need for a beach getaway was provided.

Best villa in the complex. Located at the back and managed by Kauai Vacation Rentals. The property management company was easy to work with. 

We stayed at the villa for two weeks while it was pretty stormy. We only had two days of sun which no fault of anyone made the pool practically useless. The two sunny days, the pool was almost unbearably cold, but we wouldn't have traded this spot for any other one on the island. 

We had some issues with construction on the property that the property management was unaware was occurring, but they helped stop it once we notified them. Because of the construction we had a few days we couldn't access the bbq and side areas. So if anything is going on reach out to property management, I'm sure they'll help you too! 

Because this property is at the end of the complex, lending to its privacy, it backs up to the tropical forest, which brings all kinds of critters. The birds and chickens were beautiful and we enjoyed waking up to their singing. 

Onto the inside! The layout internally was great. The linens were fresh and the house was very clean. The couch was comfy. The water pressure was great and I loved having the laundry machines accessible too.
